Cockroaches
Cockroaches
Identifying cockroaches:
Cockroaches have six long spiny legs, two antennae, and some have wings. Although some have wings, these insects are not adept at flying. They are oily to touch and have flat, oval-shaped bodies. Cockroaches are reddish-brown, with a yellowish coloring on the back of the head and, on average, can measure up to 2 inches.
Common Cockroach Species in the New York City area:
- American Cockroach
- German Cockroach
Detecting Infestations:
Cockroaches are nocturnal insects that prefer to live and feed in the dark. So, a physical sign of a cockroach is a prominent sign of an infestation. When examining for an infestation, inspect behind sinks, stoves, refrigerators, and under floor drains and major appliances. Their flat-shaped bodies fit behind narrow areas, under mats, and behind wallpaper. Additionally, pay close attention to any signs of feces. Small roaches produce what resembles the size of a coffee bean, whereas larger roaches release cylindrical droppings. In more severe scenarios, unpleasant strong oily odors may be present. If you have identified a cockroach infestation within your home, it is best to seek professional help.
