In the heart of New York City, a bustling city known for its electrifying pulse and constant movement, we coexist with a diverse range of wildlife. However, not all of these creatures are welcome residents. Among them are clandestine invaders - pests that silently infiltrate our homes and businesses, wreaking havoc, spreading diseases, and disrupting our peace.
In this comprehensive guide, we aim to shed light on the top five pest culprits that have chosen NYC as their stomping grounds. Our mission is to empower you with the knowledge necessary to identify these unwelcome interlopers, comprehend the threats they pose, and, most importantly, equip you with effective strategies to combat and prevent their unwelcome visitations. Get ready to embark on an enlightening journey as we delve into the world of New York's most common pests, arming you with the tools and insights you need to reclaim your living or working space.
First on our list is an insect that has developed a notorious reputation worldwide: the cockroach, particularly the German cockroach. These nocturnal pests are attracted to food and moisture, making urban environments like NYC ideal for them. Able to squeeze through the tiniest cracks, they invade our homes and businesses, often coming out to feed at night.
German cockroaches are small, typically around half an inch long, with a brown to dark brown coloration. They have two distinctive black stripes running lengthwise down their back. Despite having wings, they rarely fly, preferring to run when disturbed. German cockroaches are nocturnal pests attracted to urban environments like NYC. They prefer to scurry away when disturbed rather than taking flight. Cockroaches not only crash parties but also pose health risks by contaminating food and surfaces with their droppings and regurgitations, potentially spreading diseases like Salmonella and E. coli. To combat a cockroach infestation effectively, practicing good sanitation, sealing entry points, and seeking professional pest control assistance are highly recommended.
Cockroaches can cause allergies and even exacerbate asthma, especially in children. They can contaminate food and cooking surfaces with their droppings and regurgitations, potentially spreading diseases such as Salmonella and E. coli.
Control methods for cockroaches include maintaining good sanitation practices to remove their food sources, sealing potential entry points, and professional pesticide treatments. Cockroaches are notoriously hardy and reproduce rapidly, so a professional pest control service is often the most effective solution.
The next common pests on our list are rodents, specifically rats and mice. In NYC, rats and mice, particularly the Norway rat and the house mouse, dominate the list of unwanted urban wildlife in NYC. Norway rats are larger, measuring around 16 inches in length, while house mice are smaller and more streamlined. Both rodents can cause significant destruction by gnawing through various materials, and they also pose health concerns by spreading diseases such as Salmonella, Hantavirus, and rat-bite fever. Combating rodent infestations requires sealing entry points, setting traps, and often engaging professional pest control services due to the intelligence and adaptability of these creatures.
Norway rats are large rodents, typically around 16 inches in length, including the tail. They have a robust body, a blunt nose, and small ears. Their fur is coarse and brown or grey. House mice, on the other hand, are much smaller and have a light brown to grey body, large ears, and a long tail.
Rodents can cause extensive property damage, gnawing through materials like wood, plastic, and even metal. They can also spread diseases like Salmonella, Hantavirus, and rat-bite fever, either directly through bites or indirectly through their droppings and urine.
Control methods for rodents include sealing entry points, using traps, and hiring a professional pest control service. Rodents are intelligent and cautious, making them difficult to trap without experience.
Bed bugs are small, nocturnal insects that have adapted to live in close association with humans. They are often found in mattresses, furniture, and luggage, making them a common pest in hotels and homes. They are around 1/4 inch long, possess a flat, oval-shaped body, and have a reddish-brown coloration. These bloodsucking pests cause itchy bites and can lead to skin infections from excessive scratching. Although they do not spread diseases, their presence can be highly distressing. Treating a bed bug infestation may involve using mattress encasements, heat treatments, and professional pesticide treatments due to their exceptional hiding abilities and resilient eggs.
Bed bugs are small, around 1/4 inch long, with a flat, oval-shaped body. They are reddish-brown and become darker and more elongated after feeding.
Bed bugs feed on human blood, causing itchy bites and potentially leading to skin infections from scratching. Although they aren't known to spread disease, their presence can cause significant distress and discomfort.
Control methods for bed bugs include using mattress encasements to trap the bugs, heat treatments to kill them, and professional pesticide treatments. Bed bugs are excellent at hiding and their eggs are resistant to many forms of treatment, so professional pest control is usually necessary to fully eliminate an infestation.
Pigeons, often referred to as "rats with wings," are a common sight in urban areas like NYC. Although some people enjoy their presence, they can become a significant nuisance when their numbers get too high. With their gray plumage and distinctive cooing sounds, they have become a recognizable part of the cityscape. However, pigeon droppings can cause property damage, corroding metal and staining surfaces. Moreover, they can spread diseases like histoplasmosis, cryptococcosis, and psittacosis, posing health risks, especially for individuals with weakened immune systems. Deterrents such as bird spikes or netting, along with professional bird control services, can help prevent pigeons from landing or nesting on your property, ensuring a pigeon-free environment.
Pigeons are robust birds with a short neck and a small head. They are usually gray with a slightly iridescent neck, although color can vary. They are known for their cooing sound and their distinctive bobbing walk.
Pigeon droppings can cause property damage, corroding metal and staining surfaces. They can also spread diseases like histoplasmosis, cryptococcosis, and psittacosis, which can be serious in people with weakened immune systems.
Control methods for pigeons include using deterrents like bird spikes or netting, which prevent them from landing or nesting. Professional bird control services can provide these solutions, as well as cleanup and disinfection services.
Finally, we have mosquitoes. These insects are a common nuisance during the warmer months and can be found throughout NYC, particularly near standing water.
Mosquitoes are small, flying insects commonly found in NYC during warmer months, particularly near standing water. Female mosquitoes, known for their bites, require blood to produce eggs. While their bites are itchy and annoying, mosquitoes can also transmit diseases such as West Nile virus, which can be severe for certain individuals. Eliminating standing water, using repellents, and employing professional mosquito control services can effectively manage mosquito populations and keep your summer nights free from these bothersome pests.
Mosquitoes are small insects, usually less than 1/2 inch long. They have a slender body, a long proboscis for feeding, and long, thin wings. Only female mosquitoes bite, as they need the protein in blood to produce eggs.
Mosquitoes are best known for their itchy bites, but they can also spread diseases like West Nile virus, which is present in NYC. Although serious illness from West Nile virus is rare, it can be severe in some people, especially the elderly and those with weakened immune systems.
Control methods for mosquitoes include eliminating standing water, where they breed, using repellents, and professional mosquito control services. These services can provide treatments that kill both adult mosquitoes and larvae, reducing the population in your area.
In conclusion, while this list of pests in New York City is not exhaustive, it covers some of the most frequently encountered ones. It's essential to address pest problems promptly to maintain a pest-free environment. Professional pest control services are highly recommended, particularly for larger infestations, as they possess the expertise and tools needed to effectively manage and eliminate pests. Remember, taking action sooner rather than later is crucial when dealing with pests. If you suspect an infestation, don't hesitate to reach out to a professional and regain control over your living or working space. By acting swiftly, you can ensure a pest-free experience in the city that never sleeps.
I cannot explain how great these people are. Ron, the owner is super professional and fast to reply – which are two qualities I look for in a company that I need in a pinch (when a rat is in my apartment).
I was honestly a bit nervous as I was referred by a coworker and literally every review is positive (which means you are paid to or they take money off), but they were as advertised.
Ron had his tech Joe out to our apartment faster than our braindead landlords and Joe showed me explained throughly and with fact based evidence (droppings) that it was actually a baby rat. He patched numerous entry points, set multiple traps, and assured me they would not be coming back.
I was not paid nor had a discount for this interview – they are just that good!
I used this company for the first time abt 3 years ago. The owner himself answered the call and scheduled a service ASAP. The person servicing the apartment came on time, completed the services and I never had any issues again in that apartment. Before using the company I had anxiety abt coming home, being home etc.
When I moved this past year, it was one of the important things on my list to get done before moving in, right up there with installing internet. Again Ron answered, coordinated and even communicated via text which was convenient for me. The person came on time, checked all the perimeters, sealed what needed to be.
It’s honestly money very well spent for the peace it brings me.
Professional, fast, and the job gets done.
Excellent. Meticulous. I wasted a lot of money on many professionals. I would have saved a lot of money and had peace of mind must sooner if I had gone with this company. Joe was the only person that pulled out the fridge. That’s the type of professional you need- someone that is serious about finding every single hole or access point. Peace is priceless. I have young children. I need someone that has a keen eye and does this line of work with care. Thank you.
I called City Express frantic this morning after seeing a little critter. Ron answered and was able to schedule a service today. I am so pleased with the job that was done, the exterminator took his time with covering up holes and finding entryways. He answered all my questions, went through the entire apartment and made sure I was happy with the outcome. I look forward to my 30 day visit and I hope I never see one of those things again! Ron called me after the visit to ask how the service went and to see if I was feeling better. I can finally sleep in peace tonight. Excellent service, 100% recommend.
Picture this: It’s Thursday night, 9:06pm, December 22nd, right before the long Christmas weekend. You are finishing a long day of work in your Flatiron office, alone on your floor, preparing for one more full day of work before the break. Out of the corner of your eye you see a frantic and scary mouse scurrying back and forth on your rug. You scream, and the mouse hides behind the couch.
Who you gonna call?
Fortunately, I called City Express Exterminating. On Friday morning I reached this company, and my paniced plea for help was received calmly by Ron. He assured me that it was possible, even with the holiday weekend, to send help out later that day yes – Friday, December 23!
Richie arrived even earlier than scheduled. He looked over the office surroundings, and professionally and acutely assessed the situation. He explained to me the holes that were allowing for the infestation, and how he was going to stop them. He took extra care to explore any possible openings around the radiator and plugged those as well. We reviewed additional prevention strategies, and agreed that leaving bait boxes were the most that my stomach could handle. He assured me that it was VERY unlikely any more vermin could enter the office, but he would return in a month just to make sure that the holes were still plugged, and the boxes hadn’t been touched.
Did I mention this all took place on Friday, December 23rd, and that every other company had already closed for the holiday?
Living in New York City is a blessing and a curse. The curse is dealing with threats from vermin who don’t take Christmas off. The blessing is having resources like City Express Exterminating. They are a first rate company, providing professional, thorough, responsible, and efficient services. I thank Richie and this company for helping me get through the end of the year with my nerves in tact, my business thriving, and with the knowledge that I am well prepared for any rodential challenges in 2017.
In my apartment I saw a tiny mouse scurry into the heat radiators one late night. I decided to do a search for an extermination company that would be able to take a look the next day because I was so terrified.
Luckily City express Exterminating was able to accommodate my concerns and come the next day. The specialist did a full walkthrough of every inch in my apartment and set up traps and barriers in all areas where mice could come in. They explained that I didn’t have an infestation and it was probably just an lone mouse trying to find warmth in the winter. I haven’t yet seen a mouse again.
I’m knocking off one star because they are pretty pricey and I was told the credit card machine was not working which was kind of odd. I do think this should be made aware early on because many people may not keep that amount of cash on hold or would like to benefit from credit card cash back services. Also another reason for the deduction is I was supposed to get a 30 day follow up but didn’t receive one.
About a month ago we had a little mouse pop up in our Manhattan apartment. After living in NYC for 10+ years, this is the first time I’ve dealt with a rodent of any sort, so it’s a pretty jarring experience when you see a mouse run across your kitchen, especially when you have a newborn baby crawling around the house.
I emailed City Express, and the next morning Ron got in touch, and within a few days a 2 of his team members came over. They were very thorough, filled all the gaps, laid down some traps, etc. Unfortunately a few weeks later the mouse showed up again. Ron scheduled Greg to come back out (today) and he was fantastic. He worked with our building handyman to pull the dishwasher out, as we weren’t able to get behind the dishwasher the first time they came out.
Ron has been very responsive and helpful throughout the process, and I again can’t stress enough how great Greg was. We’re confident the job is done and the mouse have no way of getting into the apartment at this point, but even though we don’t know for certain, Greg did everything he could on his end.
Greg came over to my NYCHA apartment and filled in the gaps. He told me where the rats like to live and where it goes pooping, etc.
He was not able to catch the rat but he helped rat proof my home. For that I’m forever grateful. Greg also taught me where to place traps etc – the trap ultimately worked. Without his pointers about where to place the rat trap, I highly doubt I would’ve caught it this quickly. That plus plugged in holes means no more rats for like forever.
Thanks again!
They are truly wonderful. I spotted a few tiny bugs near my bed and freaked out. My building manager had an exterminator who came to inspect and claims he saw nothing. A few days later I saw them again, as well as me getting bites.
I called them at 4am and Ron answered my call. He was wonderful and told me what the process is. Later that day he sent someone over who inspected and sprayed my apartment. 10 days later someone else was sent and did a follow up. Any questions I have, Ron answers.
A great dude with a great company. Would recommend 100%.
I called them late afternoon on a Sunday and got a response right away. Unfortunately, they weren’t able to get some one out same day (although given the time when I reached out, I was not surprised and don’t fault them for). Someone did visit me first thing the next morning and did a thorough inspection. A follow up is scheduled in 30 days but so far I am happy with the service.
I’m just seeing my review from last year and this will be very similar, so give City Express points for consistency. My wife, while feeding our newborn, saw a mouse around 3:00 in the morning. By 8:00 am, on what was certainly one of the hottest and muggiest days of the year, Greg was in our apartment and on the hunt. It may be luck that City Express had someone available when we we were in need (twice!), but what isn’t luck is their professionalism and thoroughness. And Greg deserves another call-out. He was great.
I’ve used them twice now for mice issues and both times have been excellent.
In my current case, Gary was not only prompt, professional, and kind, but he literally checked every place obvious and not for holes. He was helpful and really took his time, which I appreciated, especially since I had to juggle a dog and baby.
He found the breach, eliminated it and helped me reset the area. I would absolutely recommend and use them again(hopefully not too soon) Two thumbs way up!
AMAZING mice removal and extermination. I had a very severe mouse infestation as my building management has let the situation get out of control. I decided to take matters into my own hands and hire these guys out of pocket, They did an incredible job dealing with my mouse problem, sealing up holes, and making sure they don’t come back. Very impressed and would highly recommend their service. 5 stars all the way!
I’m a student living in New York. I woke up last night to find a huge RAT in my apartment! I call several pest control companies no response. Then I got in touch with City Exterminating and they were at my apartment within 1 hour! Ron came in removed the rat & sealed the opening where it came in from. He was amazing so happy he was able to help me out!!!! Thanks ron
I just bought my renovated apartment in May and lived here without seeing a mouse. Well, two days ago as I was working late at night at home, a mouse just came out from under the kitchen radiator and ran back out! I was mortified and too scared to sleep the rest of the night. I realize now, building management will only do so much. Glue traps are not enough if you don’t find the points of entry for mice. A colleague told me about this establishment and after thorough research and price quotes, I called them. Ron was very nice and professional and allowed me to have my freak out on the phone. All the other companies made me feel as if I was over reacting, but Ron did not do that. He actually calmed me down and I was more than happy to go with them for rodent control. He sent his son the next morning and he was thorough and showed me every hole and every place the mice could be coming from and filled each and every one THOROUGHLY. The renovation left several holes open and ALL of the radiators had large holes around them. No one had ever done a thorough check in all the years of this pre war building obviously. I highly recommend getting the full service because they go behind every appliance, the bathrooms, closets, every radiator. He even filled holes near my stairs for me to make me feel better! I felt so much better immediately and he will be back to check bait stations in thirty days. Again, for a full hour (and some change) of work and a follow up visit: this is worth every penny! I now feel comfortable in my new place.
City Express just finished exterminating and mice proofing our apartment in the West Village right around the corner from Murray’s Cheese Shop (Mice HQ in NYC). They did a brilliant job and were extremely thorough. Went around our apartment twice and proofed every single room, closet, corner, nook & cranny. Pulled out all the appliances and base boards to ensure everything was proofed professionally.
Highly recommend their service. They also came in a moment’s notice which was also VERY MUCH appreciated considering we had seen 4 mice playing soccer with a Tortilla chip the night before. We called them at 11pm on Monday evening and by 7am Tuesday morning they were mice proofing our apartment. The other agency we had called said they couldn’t come out for 7 days which clearly was unacceptable.
Thanks again City Express! I definitely plan on recommending your service to others.
I had a mice issue in my apartment and called City Express to help me resolve my troubles. The dispatcher was extremely friendly and helpufl and offered same day service.
The tech. arrived not more than 3 hours after my call and was great! Patched all the entry points, laid down bait stations and set down glue traps. He even encouraged me to follow-up with them if I saw any additional evidence of mice. And, of course, the price was great!
I highly recommend these guys and will definitely use them again should I have another pest problem (roaches, mice, etc.).
I heard some noises at the middle of the night. I recently moved to the city. So I called a few exterminators and the only one who picked up was city express. They were very knowledgeable and let me know that it sounded like I had a rodent problem. A city express technician arrived shortly. He inspected the whole apt, found a hole were the rat came from sealed it up & caught the rat. They explained every part of there procedure. I haven’t had a problem since, thanks City Express for the great service!
Very pleased with my experience with City Express! The owner, Ron, was incredibly responsive and pledged to get someone out to my apt. as soon as possible – which he did. There was no guessing about rates for my rodent inspection and proofing or getting hosed once the tech showed up. That sort of transparency is very appreciated. He offered me 1 reasonable price that was incredibly affordable compared to his competition who quoted a rate of $550 for the first 2 hours. When Rich (the technician) showed up, he was polite, thorough, and explained everything perfectly. Though I didn’t actually have any new visitors (thank goodness), peace of mind is priceless!
I had a problem with mice due to construction in the street around my apartment. I called after hours and the technician arrived in an hour. To reserve the technician, they ask for your credit card number, and you have to pay by check. The technician Rich was great. I told my super the mice were coming in from under the stove and from a hole in my pantry closet. The super told me moving the stove would be a big job and they’d have to tear down my counter. Rich pulled the stove out and filled the holes, 1-2-3. He went around the whole apartment to find entry ways like radiators and filled holes and set up glue traps and bait traps. He explained everything he did. And he’s very friendly and helpful and answered any questions I had. I highly recommend City Express!
